The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is the leading database for systematic reviews in health care. A systematic review attempts to identify, appraise and synthesize all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a specific research question.

You can explore the Cochrane Library to search for and select systematic reviews of interventions or main concepts being examined in your research question. Searching may involve conducting an advanced search (using keywords or the PICO model), a basic search, or browsing broad topics (such as “Dentistry & oral health”, “Public health”, “Health & safety at work” and more).

Cochrane Library Access

  • Abstracts and plain language summaries are always free. These provide a clear overview of the evidence and key findings for most users.
  • New full-text reviews generally require institutional or library access. Immediate access is typically most useful for researchers and other heavy users who wish to examine the full methods and detailed findings.
  • Full reviews become openly available after about 12 months. After this period, the complete text can be accessed without a subscription.
  • In some Canadian jurisdictions (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Prince Edward Island), residents have full access to the Cochrane Library through regional library or institutional arrangements.
