Description
Are you looking for a refresher on oral pathology? This online course empowers dental hygienists to identify oral
lesions and pathological conditions that could impact patient health and treatment planning. Enhance patient care
by developing a deeper understanding of oral pathology, including risk factors, causes, differential diagnosis,
and treatment options for various oral lesions. Covering three key modules—oral infections, benign lesions, and
oral signs of systemic diseases—learn to recognize signs of pathology, differentiate lesion types, and identify
oral indicators of systemic conditions. Filled with clinical imagery and practical examples, this course
highlights the essential role of dental hygienists in early detection and patient education.
To build on your knowledge and explore its practical implications, review the joint position paper and statement from
CDHA and ADHA discussing aerosol-generating procedures and mitigation measures. Educate yourself about the
current evidence on effective devices, methods, and protocols to reduce the risk of infection transmission during
aerosol-generating procedures.
Module 1: Oral Infections
This module explores a range of common oral infections encountered in clinical practice. Learners will review
bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, focusing on their etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic features,
and management strategies. Emphasis is placed on recognizing early signs to ensure timely referral and
intervention.
Module 2: Red, White, and Purple Benign Lesions
In this module, examine the appearance and clinical behaviour of benign red, white, and purple lesions of the
oral cavity. Using clinical images, the module will enhance your ability to conduct a differential diagnosis and
highlight when to monitor, manage or refer for further evaluation.
Module 3: Oral Manifestations of Systemic Diseases
This module focusses on how systemic conditions may present with oral symptoms. Gain insight into identifying
oral clues that may indicate underlying systemic diseases, such as autoimmune conditions, hematologic disorders,
or nutritional deficiencies. The content emphasizes the dental hygienist’s role in interdisciplinary care.
