Orofacial Function Matters

Orofacial myofunctional therapy is being incorporated into some dental hygiene practices and can be a way to facilitate an inter-disciplinary approach to client care. Oral and facial resting postures and swallowing patterns may be linked to symptoms requiring treatment, and dental hygienists can play a key role in identifying and referring clients to appropriate care.

Silver Diamine Fluoride for Caries Control

Silver-containing products have long been used as antimicrobial agents in many medical applications, including dentistry. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has been used for caries management in other countries for more than 80 years, gained acceptance by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2014, and was approved by Health Canada in 2017. During this webinar, Dr. Scott Tomar will discuss the mechanisms by which SDF works, the clinical indications for SDF, and its method of application based on the scientific literature.

Baccalaureate Dental Hygiene Education: Exploring the New National Competencies

In this session, we will explore the “why,” “how,” and “what” questions surrounding the national competencies for dental hygiene education in Canada. We will examine the results of the 2013 CDHA Delphi study implemented in collaboration with the University of Manitoba to gain a better understanding of the competencies associated with four-year dental hygiene baccalaureate education as well as other Canadian and international literature that sheds light on baccalaureate education. In particular, we will analyze the competencies that were found to differentiate between diploma and baccalaureate dental hygiene graduate abilities.
