Independent practices continue to grow in Canada. According to CDHA’s 2017 Job Market & Employment Survey, the number has doubled in the previous two years. CDHA recognizes that as practices continue to grow and mature, so do their needs. CDHA is pleased to announce the addition of our new Independent Practice eLearning Series: Evolving Your Practice to the Independent Practice Network’s (IPN) roster of exclusive and complimentary professional development offerings!

The three modules are:

Module 1: Growing Your Practice

Module 1 features corporate structuring and basic tax planning concepts, alternative business and clinical arrangements, and intermediate business concepts specific to independent dental hygiene practices.

Module 2: Storefront Strategies

Module 2 explores the mindset and motivational components of business ownership as well as practical strategies to develop and expand your clinical practice.

Module 3: Mobile & Long-Term Care Strategies

Module 3 provides strategies to overcome common operational challenges and navigate growth transitions unique to mobile practices in long-term care and explores the importance of interprofessional collaboration.

About the Course Developer

Relevance to Practice

This series is intended to support independent dental hygienists (IDHs) who have established small or medium-sized practices and are looking to take the next step. Through solid business planning, rooted in realistic metrics and supported by other knowledgeable professionals such as accountants and lawyers, this can be a very exciting and profitable transition. Concepts discussed in this series can be applied to an existing business’ model to help foster further growth. Regardless of chosen area of practise, all providers can take something from each module.

Format for Learning

The Independent Practice eLearning Series includes three modules, each consisting of a video and a quiz. Each module will take approximately 45 to 60 mins to complete. With the exception of the quiz at the conclusion of each module, you can take as much time as you need.

You will require access to a computer and the internet to complete the series. You may wish to print off the resource list for each module to refer to for further learning opportunities. A certificate of completion is available upon successful completion of all three modules and quizzes.

Evaluation

When you feel you are ready, you may complete the quiz at the end of each module. The quiz is multiple choice and randomly generated from a pool of questions. The passing score is 80% for each quiz.
You may attempt each quiz a maximum of two (2) times to achieve a passing grade. If you are not successful, contact CDHA for further assistance.
A certificate of completion, issued by CDHA, will be available for you to print upon successful completion of all three modules and quizzes.

Course Developer

Amanda Acker, RDH

Amanda graduated from Algonquin College in 2001. Her Ottawa clinic is multidisciplinary and offers the services of a denturist and dentist, in addition to those of dental hygienists. Amanda works closely with many community-based organisations. She also works as a peer mentor through the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. Since 2015, Amanda has worked at the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association as the independent practice advisor, where she is the first line of contact for business and independent practice advice.
