Dental hygienists and their clients are inundated with stressors every day. Chronic stress is
toxic and is an
inflammatory condition that increases our vulnerability to hundreds of diseases. The current
leading causes of death
from non-communicable diseases are cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus,
respiratory disorders, and the
neuropsychiatric disorders of anxiety, depression, and dementia. We treat clients with these
conditions every day.
Mind–body medicine is based on the recognition that beliefs, thoughts, feelings, attitudes,
behaviours, and
relationships can have a profound effect on the body, and vice versa. There is an ever-growing
body of evidence that
supports the understanding of mind–body medicine in reducing stress and increasing resiliency,
thereby decreasing our
own vulnerability to disease and aging. Mind–body medicine works! Join me to discover
science-based solutions to
reducing your stress and the stress of your clients so that you can live happier and healthy
lives.
By the end of this session, participants will be able
to:
- Recognize personal responses to stress
- Apply meditative techniques to help elicit the body’s natural relaxation response
