Oral Cancer Screening for Today's Population: The Need for Change

Jo-Anne Jones, DipDH, RDH

A study released by the National Cancer Institute confirms that HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers rose by an astounding 225% between 1998 and 2004. If this trend continues, oral cancer will become the nation’s leading HPV-related cancer within the present decade, surpassing cervical cancer. Both the medical and dental communities have been alerted to this emerging pandemic.

We once felt confident identifying those among our client population who were at inherent risk. This is no longer the case. There is an urgent need for change. It’s within our hands.

After the event, participants will be able to

  • compare and contrast HPV-negative and HPV-positive incidence and mortality in today’s population.
  • increase awareness of symptoms and anatomical sites that are critical to earlier identification of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer.
  • self-evaluate present oral cancer screening methods in dental hygiene clinical practice.
  • provide additional resources to the dental hygiene client regarding risk behaviours for HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer.

The Science of Oral Rinses

Joanna Asadoorian, RDH, PhD

Research shows considerable added benefit to incorporating home oral rinsing into one's oral health care routine—over and above that achieved by toothbrushing and interdental cleansing. However, with so many products available, it is critical that dental hygienists advise clients on the appropriate selection and use of therapeutic oral rinses, and, equally, that they motivate their clients to take on new behaviour. This presentation reviews the latest research on the efficacy, safety and utility of therapeutic oral rinses and highlights health behaviour counseling techniques to assist dental hygienists in stimulating positive behavioural change in clients.

Learning Objectives

  • To describe the "added" therapeutic benefits of oral rinses to oral health
  • To justify the utility of therapeutic oral rinses in light of current research on safety and efficacy
  • To apply health behaviour counselling techniques to stimulate behavioural change in clients, particularly in incorporating an oral rinse into home care routines

Mouthing Off! A Look at the Oral Health of Today's Youth

Jo-Anne Jones, DipDH, RDH

Fast foods, the quest for the “perfect” image, and changing sexual behaviours have all had a profound effect on the oral cavity and overall health. This knowledge allows us to identify areas of concern and intervene to guide today’s teenager to make positive health decisions. Whether we are dental professionals or parents, we need to possess a deeper understanding of the unique pressures and peer influencers on the youth of today. Discover what their mouth is telling you and they’re not!

After the event, participants will be able to

  • understand how certain lifestyle and sexual behaviours are placing our youth at risk for a number of dental issues.
  • identify dietary influencers that are impacting oral health.
  • emerge empowered to respond proactively to the oral health needs of today’s youth.
  • be equipped with client education materials and clinical resources.
