Summary

Current evidence suggests that caries risk increases when sugars are consumed at high frequency and are in a form that is retained in the mouth for long periods of time. Giving dietary advice therefore, remains an important part of caries management of clients attending dental practices. The presentation describes the recent Cochrane review of one-to-one dietary interventions in a chairside setting. This review concludes that there is some evidence that such interventions are effective at changing behaviour, and that this is greater for interventions aiming to change fruit, vegetable and alcohol consumption than for those interventions aiming to change sugar consumption.
