Summary

This relaxed, hands-on workshop will highlight various strategies used to achieve sharp cutting edges on scalers and curettes. The It’s About Time sharpening method will be applied.

In addition, a classic approach to sharpening periodontal scalers and curettes will be explained and instrument design and sharpening stone options will be reviewed. Participants will practice manual sharpening techniques on a variety of dental hygiene instruments and will come away from this session with useful strategies for manual and automated options to achieve optimally sharpened instruments.

Learning objectives

After attending the session, participants will be able to:

  • List the benefits achieved when utilizing scalers and curettes with sharp cutting edges
  • Distinguish a “dull” cutting edge from a “sharp” edge
  • Describe and perform the sharpening procedure for Sickle Scalers, Universal Curettes, and Gracey Curettes

All sharpening supplies will be provided.

Presenter

France Hébert

France Hébert has gained experience in the dental industry by practicing as a dental assistant for more than 13 years in general practice and periodontics. This experience brought her to a position at Hu-Friedy Mfg, which she has held since 2004. She is responsible for the Montréal region as a regional account manager.

Although France holds a degree in human sciences, she also has a certificate in marketing as well as sales training diplomas for CPSA, Acton Selling, and Master Hu-Friedy Sales Professional.

France and her spouse live on the south shore of Montreal and enjoy golf, tennis, and love to travel.
