Ultrasonic instrumentation technology has evolved dramatically, providing greater utility subgingivally including debridement of light deposits and the disruption of biofilm. This shift beyond “gross calculus removal” has prompted a significant increase in the use of ultrasonics over the past 25 years, yet the availability of instructional resources and support for teaching ultrasonic instrumentation has not kept pace. Consequently new research shows that graduates of Canadian dental hygiene programs are underutilizing and incorrectly implementing ultrasonic technology. Based on their recent research, the presenters will share best practices for ultrasonic teaching. Problem-based learning exercises, critical thinking assignments, and faculty calibration will be a focus.
