Summary

FACT: 11 million Canadians are living with prediabetes or diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that is expected to affect 13 million Canadians by 2026. Currently, more than one million are living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. These scary statistics stress the importance of raising awareness and identifying signs, symptoms, and risk factors for ourselves and our clients.

Research on the "two-way relationship" between diabetes and periodontitis is widely accepted, with diabetes increasing the risk for periodontitis and periodontal inflammation negatively affecting glycemic control. Long-term complications related to poor metabolic control in diabetic clients can affect their eyes and their entire body system. In this session, we will take a closer look at health history assessment, risk analysis, and identification of barriers that are essential for effective treatment planning and therapy.

Educating ourselves and our clients will provide critical information that may potentially lead to early diagnosis and preventive strategies that are key to successful management of this disease from an oral health perspective.
