CDHA President’s Welcome

Anne Caissie, RDH (elle/she, her)

On behalf of the board of directors of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), I would like to invite you to scenic Winnipeg, Manitoba, for CDHA’s 2023 Summit. The event will be held within Treaty 1 territory, traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We thank them for stewarding this land. We hope that you will join us from October 20 to 21 to learn more about the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in dental hygiene. The program will support your efforts to build intercultural capacity, develop anti-racist attitudes and skills, reduce health inequities, and provide non-discriminatory care for all folks. I look forward to joining you in Winnipeg and exploring how our collective efforts can create culturally safe dental hygiene practices and health-promoting relationships.

Objectives of the Summit

  • To emphasize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in dental hygiene and build intercultural capacity for understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.
  • To discover how cultural safety, cultural humility, DEI, and belonging influence dental hygiene practice and non-discriminatory care for clients.
  • To create a safe space for dialogue on anti-racism and promote respectful conversation by allowing different voices to be heard, acknowledged, and valued.
  • To support efforts to build culturally safe practices and health-promoting relationships with all who access dental hygiene services.
  • To encourage dental hygienists to facilitate change, reduce health inequities, understand power and privilege, and counter racial prejudice and oppression.
Being a part of an event such as this 2022 Summit has made me proud of my career choice and proud to be part of such a strong group of professionals who put compassion and advocacy at the forefront of their practice.
