Advocacy for Dental Hygienists
This session will review current party standings in Parliament, identify legislative priorities, recommend future opportunities, and suggest key messaging tools and tricks for an effective grassroots lobbying strategy. Participants will gain a better understanding of the current political climate and learn how to develop a roadmap for success when advocating for dental hygiene across Canada.
After hearing this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe CDHA’s mission, key messages, and “asks” to policy makers
- Identify each level of government and explain their respective roles in promoting health care in Canada
- Explain how to engage in grassroots advocacy to put oral health on the federal government’s agenda
- Summarize best practices for engaging decision makers at all levels through in-person meetings, conversations and presentations, and follow-up correspondence

Considerations of Contemporary Indigenous Discourse in Dentistry
On behalf of the Indigenous Dental Association of Canada, Sheri McKinstry will present on contemporary Indigenous discourse in Canada and how it pertains to dentistry. She will touch on the social determinants of health, neoliberalism, Jordan’s Principle, Joyce’s Principle, reconciliation, and the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
After hearing this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and consider personal roles in reconciliation
- Recognize and consider professional roles in reconciliation
- Become familiar with contemporary Indigenous discourse in Canada
- Recognize the role of the social determinants of health on Indigenous oral health

This session discusses bias, how our biases towards others are formed, why we might be unaware of our biases, and how they affect the people with whom we interact. At the end of the session, attendees will walk away with practical strategies to manage bias in the workplace.
