In 2019, CDHA hosted a national dental hygiene conference, “DISCOVER,” held October 3 to 5 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, at the St. John’s Convention Centre.

Thank You!

Thanks to everyone who attended the 2019 national dental hygiene conference in picturesque St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. CDHA staff and board of directors, and sponsors collaborated to deliver one of the very best conferences to date.

Conference attendees can access select conference handouts and a certificate of attendance in their CDHA profile.

Conference Highlights

More than 300 participants from across Canada, the United States and countries outside of North America attended the conference, including dental hygienists, speakers, industry representatives, and students. Four half-day preconference workshops were held on Thursday, October 3, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony which marked the opening of the conference and entry into the exhibit hall. The exhibit hall welcome reception was sponsored by BMO and the first 100 delegates through the doors received a special Newfoundland-themed gift, courtesy of BMS.

To kick off the day’s educational sessions on Friday, October 4, early risers joined Crest + Oral-B at their Sunrise Breakfast, which celebrated the profession of dental hygiene. Delegates had an opportunity to hear an inspirational panel presentation, network with friends, enjoy a hot breakfast, and left feeling #hygienistproud with an Oral-B power toothbrush in hand. This was followed by a group of Celtic musicians playing ‘jigs and reels’ as they welcomed delegates into the opening ceremonies. CDHA board directors, provincial presidents and special guests were then welcomed into the main ballroom for the singing of O Canada. During the opening plenary, sponsored by PHILIPS, Karen Raposa inspired and moved us with her presentation about the special client with autism and/or anxiety. Eight breakout sessions were offered throughout the rest of the day, including a lunch in the exhibit hall where members could reconnect with colleagues and visit the many dental hygiene-related exhibits. The “Catch a Cod” exhibit hall fish pond and CDHA Newfie Fun photo booth was a popular spot for delegates. This year’s new 10 for 10! Product Showcase provided a unique opportunity for delegates to hear from 10 companies on their new and updated products for the dental hygiene profession. On Friday evening, a sold-out crowd of over 130 experienced local nightlife and "kissed the cod" on the infamous George Street in downtown St. John’s during Rally in the Alley.
