Societal Trends and Behaviours: What is the Impact on Oral Health?
Summary
At the center of today's health promotion strategy is the improvement and maintenance of oral health. A
number of
current social and sexual behaviours are placing dental hygiene clients at risk. E-cigarette use and
vaping among youth
is now a significant public health concern. The obsession of escalating sugar in daily diets, the
combination of
alcohol and energy drinks, and the growing incidence of HPV-associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers
are just a few of
the trends that are impacting clients’ health. Oil pulling, charcoal whitening, and other trends will
be reviewed
separating myth from evidence-based science.
We need to be vigilant in our assessment of risk to better enable us to manage disease and more importantly,
prevent
disease. The incorporation of risk assessment and evidence-based clinical guidelines into today’s
dental practice is
both exciting and rewarding, replacing routine dental care with client-centered risk management and
disease prevention.
Learning objectives
After attending the session, participants will be able to:
- Explore lifestyle trends that have an adverse effect on health and well-being
- Apply the most current clinical guidelines for treatment and disease management
- Incorporate effective chairside and self-care treatment protocols to proactively address the impact
of current
societal trends
- Apply a developed risk assessment program complemented by evidence-based protocols

Going to Pot: Weeding Out Potential Benefits and Dangers of Marijuana Use
Summary
Legalization of marijuana in the United States and Canada has outpaced research into its possible benefits
and risks to
systemic as well as oral health. While many states and provinces grapple with legalizing marijuana for
medicinal and/or
recreational use, it has become apparent that the cannabis industry is generating tremendous profits in
those areas
permitting its use. As profits grow and access to marijuana products becomes easier, healthcare
professionals need to
be aware of signs and symptoms associated with cannabis use and recommend appropriate treatment
strategies to address
negative sequelae. During this session, learn about current research developments in a lively forum
designed to
encourage audience participation.
Learning objectives
After attending the session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the history behind marijuana use
- Differentiate the different types and methods of use for cannabinoid products
- Recognize various medical applications for marijuana
- Distinguish oral signs and symptoms of marijuana use
- Recommend appropriate home care and nutritional strategies for cannabis users
