The following sessions were captured at the 2013 National Conference, Celebrating our Roots…Our Wings. The sessions are AUDIO only, and may include pauses where audience participation was encouraged. Energize your Roots, Spread their Wings

Morale low? Students seem uninterested or apathetic? As instructors, we can motivate and inspire ourselves and our students. This workshop will demonstrate and explain how to make classroom learning more meaningful. The presenter will summarize some of the research findings in the areas of cognitive psychology, education, and physiology that hold direct implications for classroom teaching. In addition, a number of easily adaptable classroom activities will be used during the session.

Presented by: Adam Persky, PHD, FACSM

Adam received his BSc in biology from Purdue University and a master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He completed his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Florida. An industry-sponsored postdoctoral fellowship in pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics followed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004 where he is currently a clinical associate professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics. He has received several teaching awards from the School of Pharmacy including Best Overall Instructor. He was named an Atlantic Coast Conference Teaching Scholar during the program’s inaugural year (2009–2010). He has published almost a dozen articles on teaching, and has given over 30 national-level workshops for 7 universities, 4 national organizations, and in 14 different states.

Tongue-Tied: A Story NOT Silenced by Oral Cancer

Eva Grayzel, a master storyteller and performance artist, communicates her experience as a cancer survivor in a unique and powerful way. For more than 10 years, Eva has passionately and publicly shared her dramatic story worldwide at dental meetings, healthcare association conferences, and cancer centres. A champion for early detection, Eva founded an oral cancer awareness campaign—Six-Step Screening—for which she was recognized by the American Academy of Oral Medicine and awarded honorary membership. Eva Grayzel celebrated her 10 year cancer-free anniversary by creating the Talk4Hope book series for children who have a family member with cancer, featuring titles such as You Are Not Alone: Families Touched by Cancer and Mr. C Plays Hide & Seek. Eva’s engaging lectures and training workshops on communicating through stories allow her to deliver mesmerizing programs, actively engaging each member of the audience both professionally and personally.

Understanding Your Gynecology and Oral Health (“Ginn Fizz!”)

Counselling the dental patient with gynecological concerns for maximal oral health is the main focus. This presentation will also cover basic anatomy, embryology, menstruation, endocrinology, menopause, endometriosis, leaky bladders, pelvic pain, heavy periods and fibroids. The treatments of these conditions will be shown by slides and videos from surgical procedures to empower women to manage their physical challenges together with their gynecologist to realize the greatest improvement.

Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office: Is There a Doctor in the House?

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, even in our dental offices. As healthcare practitioners, we owe it to ourselves, our teams and our patients to be trained and prepared to handle these emergencies when they arise anywhere, especially at our workplace. This interactive (and fun...really) session will review and discuss a range of topics including the significance of patient medical histories; the assessment of your patients’ health and fitness for treatment; your office’s medical emergency kits; how to recognize some of the more common or important medical emergencies; emergency prevention strategies; emergency scenarios; emergency treatment algorithms, and what happens after the first 10 minutes of an emergency. Feel free to bring your cases and experiences to this session! The objective is to get you more knowledgeable and comfortable in handling medical urgencies that will periodically arise in your offices.

Dr. Peter Nkansah is a specialist in dental anaesthesia with a private practice―Sleep For Dentistry―in Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto with his DDS in 1993 and his diploma in dental anaesthesia in 1996. He is a clinical instructor and course director at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, and a member of the teaching staff for continuing education at Western University and at the University of Toronto. He is an advanced cardiac life support course director with the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and a member of the editorial board of the dental journal, Oral Health. He is also the dental consultant for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues teams, the Toronto FC, and the Toronto Raptors.
