Baccalaureate Dental Hygiene Education: Exploring the New National Competencies

In this session, we will explore the “why,” “how,” and “what” questions surrounding the national competencies for dental hygiene education in Canada. We will examine the results of the 2013 CDHA Delphi study implemented in collaboration with the University of Manitoba to gain a better understanding of the competencies associated with four-year dental hygiene baccalaureate education as well as other Canadian and international literature that sheds light on baccalaureate education. In particular, we will analyze the competencies that were found to differentiate between diploma and baccalaureate dental hygiene graduate abilities.

The presentation will summarize the findings from the 2015 job market and employment survey that Framework Partners undertook for CDHA. It will review the profile of respondents, hours worked, employment status, and hourly rates or annual salaries across Canada. The presentation will also discuss trends in other facets of employment including contracts, performance reviews, and job satisfaction. Finally, findings about independent dental hygiene practices and the future plans of respondents will be reported. Comparisons to data from previous job market and employment surveys will be made.
