This presentation will delve into two recently published comprehensive literature reviews of research on commercially and non-commercially available oral rinse products. It will outline the methodology used to identify and analyse the current body of evidence, and will summarize the key findings. CDHA’s updated position on therapeutic oral rinsing will be discussed in details to support dental hygienists in evidence-based decision making for ensuring optimal oral health for their adult clients.
Joanna Asadoorian is an oral health educator, researcher, and a full-time professor at George Brown College in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated in 1989 with a diploma in dental hygiene from Erie Community College, New York, and then worked in general
clinical practice while pursuing her BSc in dental hygiene and MSc in dentistry at the University of Toronto. Her master’s research focussed on health care provider continuing competency. From 2003 until 2014, Joanna was on faculty at the
School of Dental Hygiene, University of Manitoba, where she also completed her PhD in the Department of Community Health Sciences. Joanna has served on the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association research advisory committee and was program
director for the Canadian Foundation for Dental Hygiene Research and Education from 2014 until 2016. Her current research interests include behaviour change strategies using various designs and therapeutic oral rinses.
Paula, a registered dental hygienist and manager of health policy at the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), has extensive experience in health promotion, advocacy and clinical dental hygiene care. Her role at CDHA involves conducting
literature reviews on critical oral health issues, developing position papers and statements, and working with the association’s Education Advisory Committee and Research Advisory Committee to build capacity and advance research in the dental
hygiene profession, and to meet the evolving and complex oral health needs of the public.
