Continuing Education
Although taking continuing education courses for dental hygienists is not currently mandatory in all provinces, there are major benefits to staying abreast of current knowledge and issues that affect the profession: from increased quality of care for your clients, to increased employment opportunities, to increased job satisfaction. To find out about the requirements in your province, please contact your provincial regulatory authority.
Information about continuing education courses in dental hygiene may be found on various sites on the Internet. Baccalaureate and graduate dental hygiene programs are also an important part of continuing education, and are critical to increasing the status of dental hygiene as a profession. With an evolving health care system that demands great independence, accountability and quality of service, dental hygiene education must be
proactive and prepare graduates for increasing levels of responsibility and
accountability in new and varied practice environments. According to the Policy Framework For Dental Hygiene Education In Canada 2005, all new students will have to possess a baccalaureate degree in Dental Hygiene for entry into dental hygiene practice by 2005.
Please contact the CDHA or your provincial association for more information about educational opportunities and class instructions on a local level.
