Advertising Policy for the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene
Definition of Advertising
The context of “advertising” and “advertisements” in the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene (the “journal”) is:
- space provided in the print version of the journal.
- inserts that go into the journal’s mailing pouch, for the promotion of services or products in exchange for payment or other consideration.
Purpose of Advertising
CDHA, through its advertising agency, solicits advertising for the journal. The purposes for including advertisements in or with the journal are:
- to convey information about products and services used by dental hygienists in their work or in other activities.
- to offset the publication costs of the journal.
Disclaimer
The presence of any advertisement in or with the journal does not imply endorsement or guarantee by CDHA of the product or service, or of the manufacturer or provider.
Eligible Advertisements
Advertisements that are eligible and preferred are those for products and services of interest to dental hygienists in their professional work: clinical or community practice, dental hygiene education, continuing education, or professional development.
To be eligible, advertisements must also follow these guidelines:
- If products are offered for sale in the advertisement or insert, the contact information for the company or provider must permit dental hygienists to order the products directly from the company.
- Advertisements must be clearly recognizable as such and not resemble editorial content. If the status of an advertisement is not immediately obvious, then the word “Advertisement” or “Advertorial” must appear at the top of the advertisement.
- Readers of the journal are professional oral health care providers. Journal advertisements must be accurate in fact and in implication, must not be misleading, and must reflect professional standards of good taste and dignity.
- Advertisements’ claims for efficacy, safety, or performance must be supported by evidence.
- Advertisements that compare one product with a competitor’s product must be fair, factual, non-disparaging, and comply with the “Guidelines for the Use of Comparative Advertising,”developed by Advertising Standards Canada.
Ineligible Advertisements
Advertisements that are ineligible for admittance to the journal:
- Advertisements promoting tobacco, alcohol, or gambling
- Advertisements that contravene CDHA’s policies, position statements, mission statement, code of ethics, practice standards, vision, or values
Approval of Advertisements
All advertisements must be reviewed and approved by CDHA prior to publication. CDHA reserves, at its discretion, the right to reject any advertisement.
Placement of Advertisements
Advertisers may request specific placement for their advertisements within the journal, but CDHA will make the final decision.
Advertisements will not be placed next to editorial content that deals with the same topic or product. Exceptions may be made in themed issues.
Inserts
The journal is mailed wrapped in plastic. A certain number of advertising inserts (sheets, thin booklets, or samples of products) may be included in a mailing.
Offers for products must be available to dental hygienists, regardless of their practice context.
All items must be submitted to CDHA for approval of content as well as for estimation of mailing
charges. Canada Post has specific rules on advertising and promotional items, and the eligibility and mailing costs for items must be determined prior to final acceptance by both CDHA and the advertiser.
